National Weather Service says:  An upper level trough which extends from the Caribbean waters into the Atlantic will move slowly east today and tomorrow - bringing unstable conditions across the Virgin Islands through Wednesday. Weather conditions are expected to improve late in the week as an upper level ridge of high pressure builds across the northeast Caribbean. Across the local waters, winds will average 17 knots with seas two to five feet.

Yesterday was Memorial Day and each island held solemn ceremonies to honor the fallen soldiers who struggled to insure our freedoms and liberty.  Public figures and members of the armed forces took time in the day to visit graves, hold seaside ceremonies and participate in services of remembrance.

Governor John DeJongh has been busy. The Governor hosted a conference call with representatives of Environmental Resource Management and Compass to review plans for fundraising and construction of the Marine Research and Education Center at Salt River Bay National Park and Ecological Preserve on St. Croix.  The Governor met with Michael Bayer from Environmental Resource Management; VI Energy Office Director Karl Knight and representatives of the Compass Group: Nick Scully, Christi Shields and Carol Thornton. They are getting ready for a meeting with the U.S. National Park Service's Development Advisory Board coming up later.

The Virgin Islands National Guard is hosting an All-Hazards Coordination Workshop beginning Wednesday May 28 and Thursday the 29 at the 210th Regiment, Regional Training Institute at the Estate Bethlehem Military Compound on St. Croix.  The All-Hazards Coordinating Workshop allows Emergency Management Assistance Compact  state planners and federal partners an opportunity to share their capabilities and understand the unique challenges each face in emergency response, whether natural or manmade. During the workshop, each planning representative will update participants on critical infrastructure, reveal gaps in current plans, and refine the courses of action to expedite the flow of forces and capabilities. Representatives from FEMA, National Guard Bureau, U.S. Northern Command, and other military components are participants. State National Guard operations directorates scheduled to attend represent 11 states and Puerto Rico.

Sad news as Traffic Enforcement officers on St. Thomas said a one-car accident claimed the life of a 20-year-old passenger and left the driver in serious condition.  The accident happened on Polyberg Road just after 1 a.m. on Monday May 26. A white Suzuki Vitara traveling west on Polyberg road at high speed collided into trailer parked on the road side causing extensive damage to the car. No seat belts.

Gubernatorial candidate Soraya Diase Coffelt is recovering from a falling out with her partner for Lieutenant Governor and announced she has selected John Canegata as her new running mate for lieutenant governor.  She called Canegata, a well-known, lifetime resident of St. Croix. She said “It is appropriate that I announce my running mate John Canegata on Memorial Day – he is a veteran who served honorably for our country in the armed forces.”  Canegata said, “I consider it an honor and privilege to run with Soraya Diase Coffelt. She possess the qualifications and experience to serve as our governor, and her integrity and passion for the people is unmatched.  She is the best hope for a people’s candidate for governor.”

The University of the Virgin Islands will host the 7th Caribbean Beekeeping Congress and the 2nd Caribbean Bee College at the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix from today through Friday. The Association of Caribbean Beekeepers’ Organizations is staging the activities in collaboration with the UVI Cooperative Extension Service, the Honey Bee Research and Extension Lab at the University of Florida, and the East Caribbean Bee Research and Extension Center at St. George’s University.

The month of May is older Americans month and the Department of Human Services invites all senior citizens to celebrate with activities.  On St Croix, today is Citizenship Day at the Fritz E. Lawaetz Legislature Hall on St. Croix, 10am.

Hearty Congratulations to the graduates of the Virgin Islands Montessori School and Peter Gruber International Academy.  Thirteen seniors earned their diplomas. The Valedictorian was Kayla Clendinen who is going to Harvard University next year and the Salutatorian was Portia Norkaitis who will attend the US Naval Academy in the fall – she is Vice President Joe Biden’s sole nomination to the Naval Academy. Eleven are going to college, one joining the armed forces and one more figuring out what to do next.
