Yesterday, the Peace walk against violence, guns, and crime
was underway. More than 30 men and women joined hands together to express their
outrage toward the community’s drastic uprising of gun crime. Most participants
dressed in white, and marched in silent protest. As they proceeded down the street,
many people showed interest in their efforts. Organizers hope that this will
bring the community healing and demonstrate that other people in the community
are concerned about violence.
There was a
recognition ceremony at Kingshill School, St Croix to commemorate the 20th
anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities act. The landmark legislation
seeks to ensure the civil rights of people with disabilities by establishing a
clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary celebration, Governor
deJongh issued a proclamation in observance of the commitment of the Virgin
Islands’ government to expanding opportunities for disabled individuals by
reducing barriers, changing perceptions; erasing stigma; and increasing full
participation for those with special needs to community life. The Governor also
commended the ADA summer programs curriculum focusing on computer based modules
and new technologies.
There is federal
legislation to restore unemployment pay for those who have exhausted standard
benefits provided by the federal government. The legislation had languished in
the two houses of congress since May amidst a fierce political battle between
democrats and republicans and over those six week, benefits had ran out for an estimated two
million Americans without jobs. The Governor said that he is pleased to see
that congressional leaders from both sides of the aisle came together and
resolved their differences over whether the cost of this bill should be offset
with spending cuts or tax increases to avoid enlarging the federal deficit”
