| The Virgin Islands Cultural Heritage Institute in collaboration with the Department of Education - Cultural Education Division and the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, will host during the month of March the Territory’s Fourth Annual Music Series, entitled “Tradition Meets 21st Century”. This 2010 Music Series is in keeping with the Governor’s Proclamation designating the month of March as Virgin Islands History Month, and in observance of Music in Our Schools Month by the Department of Education. .
Throughout the month, public concerts will be held in each district, showcasing the talent of our music students in choirs, concert and jazz bands, and steel orchestras. Students from our public and private schools benefit from this experience beyond their performances as they also develop their reading, writing, oral presentations, music literacy and research skills. At the same time, they learn of contributing members of the society who has made significant contributions.
Each of the scheduled programs will be dedicated to a Virgin Islander who has or continues to contribute tremendously as a composer, conductors, musician, promoters, or related capacity to the field of music. Music of composers and musicians of the Virgin Islands, regional, national, and internationally renowned, is profiled during the Series of lunchtime concerts held in our public parks and schools.
This year we are proud to feature Virgin Islands own, “21st Century Band, under the leadership of Dion Parson, accomplished musician, drummer/ educator and Friends. This dynamic 8-piece band, of which four musicians are from the Virgin Islands include: Reginald Cyntje, trombone, Rudy Faulkner, vocalist, Victor Provost, steel pan, Calton Holmes, piano, Esiet Esiet, bass, Blueford Thompson, saxophone, Robert Thomas, Jr., percussionist.
During March 5-9, 21st Century Band will perform Public Concerts for the community throughout the Territory. The first concert will be Friday, March 5th on Croix, at the Frederiksted Beach at 6:00p.m. Saturday, March 6th on St. John at the Cruz Bay Bandstand at 6:00 p.m., and on Sunday, March 7th at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Virgin Islands Veterans Memorial Park, on St. Thomas. Final presentation of 21st Century will be at the Music Series on Tuesday, March 9th at the Emancipation Garden from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Music workshops, concerts and programs will be conducted by members of the 21st Century Band under the direction of Dion Parson for interested public and private schools on Thursday, March 6, at the Education Complex at 10:00 a.m. On Friday, March 7th, and at the Dorsch Activity and Cultural Center on Friday, March 7th at 10:00 p.m. On St. John a workshop and program will be held at the Julius Sprauve School on Monday, March 8th, at 10:00 p.m. and on St. Thomas at the Charlotte Amalie High School on Wednesday, March 10th at 10:00 p.m.
We encourage the entire community to attend the free Public Concerts to be held throughout the Territory at the various venues as we celebrate Virgin Islands History Month.
These programs are made possible through grants and funding from the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, The Virgin Islands Lottery, West Indian Company Ltd., Department of Education, Department of Tourism, Frederiksted Economical Development Association, St. Croix Renaissance Group, and the Virgin Islands Cultural Heritage Institute.
